Versatile Wardrobe Pieces: Jackets

Versatile Wardrobe Pieces including Jackets by Jos A Bank

There are plenty of good reasons to slip on a jacket or sport coat when you’re headed out. Not only does it quickly and stylishly dress up most any pair of pants, it enhances your figure by broadening your shoulders and slimming your midsection, gives you more pockets for things you’d rather not cram into trouser pockets, and sets you apart as the kind of guy who knows how to dress well.

That being said, the blessing and curse of wearing a jacket is there are so many different ways to go about it. Between colors, materials, and what you’re wearing with it, there’s a lot to think about when you’re assembling an ensemble—but rest assured, if you do it right, you’ll stand out in the right way. Here are several pointers to help you pull off a jacket for any occasion.

Make Sure The Colors Work

A jacket has the power to pull your whole outfit together, subtly lending you an air of confidence and style. That said, a jacket should rarely draw attention to itself with colors or patterns. In general, it’s a good idea to keep patterns muted and small. Tan and white colored jackets go well with darker colored trousers, navy blue blazers tend to go well with softer earth tones, and grey jackets go best with black trousers.

Choosing the right color also has a lot to do with context. For example, that white silk jacket might look like a million bucks on a beach in Havana, but it’s probably not going to get that sort of traction at your work’s annual Christmas party. For more casual events, go for lighter colored jackets. Dark blue and black jackets, on the other hand, tend to work for more formal occasions.

Wear Season-friendly Materials

If you have sweat dripping down your forehead, no one’s going to notice the beautiful cashmere jacket you wore to the summer soirée. For spring and summer, stick to lightweight wools, cotton, and silk. They’ll give your body some room to breathe. For the colder months, stick to wools, cashmere, and other heavy materials that are good for insulation and layering.

Complete The Look

For all the attention a well-chosen jacket’s going to pull your way, you had better have the details down. That means if your trousers have belt loops, wear a belt. Match your socks with your pants, and try your best to match the metal on your loafers, belt buckle, and suspenders. Don’t let a small flaw in your wardrobe ruin the vibe.
