What to Wear to Different Social Events

When it comes to dress codes, not all events are created equal.
As gentlemen, it's imperative that we have a solid understanding of what is considered appropriate attire for the myriad of social or professional events that we are invited to attend. If we're lucky, the invitation will give us some sort of inkling as to what the required ensemble is. But what about the times when we aren't given any guidelines and are left to our own devices?
Don't worry – we're here to help.
Graduation
At this event, your attire depends on whether you're walking across the stage or if you're merely supporting a friend or family member from the stands. If you are in the ceremony, then you should wear an oxford shirt and a pair of dress pants under your robes. Feel free to leave the jacket behind – it's going to be warm enough already.
If you're a spectator, you can be a bit more casual. A collared shirt and khakis will keep you comfortable without sacrificing your refined look.
Wedding
You get off easy if you're in the wedding: the groom will tell you what to wear. All you have to do is make sure your outfit is the right size, and that you make it to the ceremony on time.
As an attendee, you should show up to the ceremony in a black, gray, or blue suit, with a matching tie. You don't want to wear bright colors and draw attention to yourself because the focus of the day should be on the bride and groom.
Client Visit
Client visits come in two parts: the traveling and the actual meetings. While traveling, you want to be comfortable, but for the client meeting it's your duty to look your professional best to make a positive impression.
Even though you want to be comfortable on the plane, train, or in the car, you have to be relatively well-dressed to account for the unexpected. If you have a delay in your travel plans and are meeting the client for dinner, you want to be able to step off of the plane and look presentable. Khakis and a sportshirt will have you ready for anything.
When you are meeting your client, there is no option other than your best suit and tie to ensure that they are as impressed with you as they are with your work.
Dinner Party
Let the venue dictate your level of formality. If you're headed to a co-workers' house for steak and beer, it's fine to dress comfortably. However, if your boss is having you over for dinner, play it safe and put on a blazer and chinos. Headed out for a 5-star dining experience? Then it's time to break out your suit and tie.
No matter where you are headed, ensure you look your best!
