What Makes a Complete Tie Collection?

The right tie can make or break an ensemble. A perfect suit and dress shirt combination can be undone by the wrong tie, just as a traditional black suit and white shirt can pop with the right accessory.

Every gentleman should have a robust set of ties to choose from - one that fits any occasion, be it a wedding, a business presentation, or a cocktail party. A diverse set of colors is also a must.

Ties are a simple yet effective way to express yourself. No matter what your personal preferences may be, there are some ties that every man should have in his collection.

Black Neck Tie - This is a staple of any tie collection and is appropriate for most formal occasions. For an elegant, classic look, pair your black tie with a black suit and white shirt. But for a more casual, modern outfit, wear a colored or patterned shirt with your black tie.

Solid Neck Tie - Add a splash of color to your business formal attire with solid ties that fit your mood and the occasion such as a solid red tie. By investing in a few solid neckties in varying shades, you can experiment with different color combinations and dress shirt patterns.

Patterned Neck Tie - If you aren’t typically a flashy dresser but want to incorporate a bit of flare into your outfit, then a patterned tie is the way to go. However, make sure the pattern or color doesn’t clash with your dress shirt. Feel free to mix patterns as long as the one on the tie is bigger than the pattern of your shirt. For example, a checkered shirt matches well with a tie with large diagonal stripes.

Skinny Neck Tie - This has become more popular among men who keep up with fashion trends. If you consider yourself a fashion-forward dresser, then having one or two skinny ties in your arsenal are great for a slim, modern look.

Wool Neck Tie - This is another tie style that has gained popularity recently; the texture of the wool tie offers a modern spin on the classic accessory. Though it’s traditionally seen as more of a winter tie, wool can be worn in any season. If you’re feeling extra-stylish, spring for a skinny wool tie.

Bowties - Every man’s collection should include at least a couple bowties. The only caveat to owning a bowtie is that you have to know how to tie it properly, or have someone on-hand who is willing to tie it for you. As nice as a perfectly-tied bowtie looks with a well-tailored suit, having a sloppily tied bowtie is a fashion no-no.

In fact, that rule stands true for all ties. No matter how nice your tie may be, or how well the colors complement the rest of your outfit, no one will appreciate the nuances of your ensemble if it isn’t properly tied. Never fear, if you are feeling particularly apprehensive about this matter, we can show you how to tie a tie.

Now it’s time for you to head to your closet and take inventory. How healthy is your tie collection?
