Versatile Wardrobe Pieces: Shirts
The white dress shirt is the king of the closet when it comes to versatile shirts that every man should have in his wardrobe, but that versatility can come at a price. It isn't that a white shirt without a jacket looks bad, per se, that's just exactly what it can look like: an outfit that's missing a jacket. Here are some tips for choosing versatile shirts that look great dressed up or down.
Choosing a Versatile Fit
When it comes to versatility, basic is better. Select a dress shirt that has a tailored or slim fit; excess material bunching around your waistline is never good, but it's more noticeable when you take your jacket off. Stay away from buttoned collared shirts; spread collar and point collar shirts look better than button collared shirts without a tie and a button or two undone.
Avoid shirts with French Cuffs, which are too formal to be versatile and require cufflinks. Instead opt for a shirt that has standard buttoned cuffs. A shirt with button cuffs looks better without a jacket, and because they have less material, the sleeves are easier to roll up.
Colors & Patterns
A solid light blue shirt is probably a close second to the all-white shirt in overall versatility, but other light colored shirts like green, pink and purple are flexible options as well. Shirts with subtle patterning, whether striped or checks, are also great options.
If versatility is your goal, avoid shirts with bright colors and bold patterns; they can look great with a pair of chinos or jeans but can clash or overwhelm suits and sportcoats. The exception to this rule is a bold gingham checked shirt, which is a classic look that looks great with or without a jacket.
Polos
In summer months a polo or knit shirt can be a versatile piece that's appropriate for most occasions. Polos with loose weaves and floppy collars are fine for more casual outfits, but if you're looking for a polo that can be dressed up, opt for a shirt with a tight weave and a more structured collar. Like with dress and sports shirts, you should avoid bold stripes or patterns. However, because polos are generally worn in warmer months, brighter and bolder colors are acceptable and can be a nice accent to an outfit.
