Tips For Dressing Down A Suit

Tips For Dressing Down A Suit to be less formal by Jos A Bank

A well-fitting suit is a versatile article of clothing that can be manipulated to meet the dress code of a variety of events. From weddings, to awards ceremonies, to cocktail parties, a suit is appropriate at nearly any occasion where formal attire is required, and can be made to look as formal or as casual as necessary.

Contemporary suits are evolving and becoming more than just uncomfortable, stuffy 9-5 work attire. Nowadays, they serve as versatile after-hours wear and are seen as "cool" as opposed to "obligatory".

So, instead of racing home to change before you meet your coworkers at the local watering hole, there are a few simple ways to dress down your suit to ensure that you are more comfortable and casual, without sacrificing even the slightest bit of style.

Loosen the Tie

One quick way to make your outfit less formal is to loosen your tie. If you're wearing a traditional necktie, simply loosen the knot and undo the top button of your shirt. If it's a bowtie, pull one end so that the bow unravels, and loosen until you simply have the tie draped around your neck. Also, be sure to undo the top button or possibly even the top two buttons to achieve a laid-back yet fashionable look.

Focus on your Footwear

Nowadays, men are using their shoes to make their attire more casual. Instead of traditional dress shoes, for example, opt for something more laid-back like loafers or oxfords. If you want to push the envelope, find some sneakers to wear with your suit; the most common choices are typically something retro, notably Converse or Vans.

Pair it with Something Less Formal

Instead of wearing the usual dress shirt, grab a v-neck or scoop-neck t-shirt. Make sure the shirt is the right size so that you can leave it untucked, and that the color complements your suit jacket and pants.

Show a Little Skin

Suit pants that fall above the ankle bone, paired with shoes and no socks has become a popular style recently. You can achieve this look even if your suit is cut properly to rest right above your shoe. Simply roll your pant legs once, make sure the cuff is even, and step into a casual pair of comfortable shoes before you head out the door.
