Materials to Keep Cool this Summer

Materials to Keep Cool this Summer including cotton, linen & rayon by Jos A Bank

We would all prefer to lounge by the pool sipping our drink of choice and listening to our favorite tunes, but the unfortunate reality is that, even in summer, we still have to dress to impress. Most of our jobs don't allow us the comfort of showing up in shorts and a t-shirt, which means that five days a week we are expected to look professional even as the mercury climbs.

Not to worry, there are some materials that will help you to stay cool and still be fashionable this summer. These fabrics maximize air flow and should be a looser fit than usual.

Cotton

Cotton is one of the best materials to be worn when in the warm weather because it permits the movement of air from your skin through the material, allowing the heat to dissipate more quickly. A cotton dress shirt is durable, and though it has a tendency to absorb moisture, it can easily be machine washed and dried to be worn again.

Linen

One of the most attractive features of linen is that it loses water quickly when it gets wet or damp, which can certainly come in handy in the warmer months. Linen is also relatively stain resistant, making it the perfect fabric when you want to look fashionable at an outdoor get-together.

Rayon

Created from natural cellulose, Rayon is more fibrous than cotton and linen, allowing it to let more body heat escape in order to help regulate your core temperature. The only downside to rayon is that it isn't as durable. It's recommended that rayon be dry-cleaned instead of machine-washed.

Silk

Light, soft, and luxurious, silk will keep you nice and cool. Keep in mind, however, that the fibers have a tendency to break down with heavy exposure to sunlight. Silk might not be the best choice for your summer afternoon party, but will work wonders on those humid nights.

One Last Thing to Consider

Light colored fabrics reflect light and heat, and are therefore optimal for warmer conditions. White, pastel, and beige shirts and dress pants are common choices to avoid the absorption of excess heat.

You may not be able to beat the heat entirely, but if you stick to these fabrics you'll be able to look good and stay cool all summer long.
