How to Buy Clothes He’ll Love and Keep

Jos. A. Bank | How to Buy Clothes He’ll Love and Keep

Everyone needs new clothes now and again. Trends change, the weather changes, even individual styles change.

Clothes also get worn out. That sad day will inevitably come when his favorite pair of shorts he’s been wearing since college will finally become too ratty to wear in public. Though he will plead and protest, doing all he can not to part with them, the sad reality is that they have to go.

When buying clothes for a man, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure that he won’t sneak out and return them.

They Must Be in Style

Do your best to keep him up-to-date with current fashion trends. Long gone are the days of baggy clothes and ill-fitting pinstripe suits. Shorts are getting shorter, and clothing is fitting slimmer and becoming more colorful. Find some items that are en vogue with current fashion trends.

They Have to Fit Him

Male measurements can be tricky, and become more complicated as the clothing becomes more formal. For polo shirts and shorts the sizing is relatively simple. However, for suits, there are more things to keep in mind, and sometimes we men aren’t proportioned quite right. For example, buying a dress shirt for a man with a short torso and long arms can create a bit of an issue because typically there is a correlation between your height and the length of your arms. If you’re stumped, rather than risk it, grab a shirt from his closet and take a peek at the size.

Accommodate His Style

This is the most important thing to consider when purchasing clothes for anyone. It doesn’t matter if the clothes fit well or if they’re trendy if they aren’t something he will wear. If he’s most comfortable in blue jeans and a neutral-colored button-down, then opting for salmon shorts with a 7-inch inseam and a bright green polo will have him begging for the gift receipt.

Stick to these tips and you'll have him looking great in no time flat!
