Hat Styles For Men

Men hat styles, 1920s men hats by Jos A Bank

Pop culture has done hats a disservice. Historically, men wore hats as a functional part of their outfit to protect their heads from the elements and to keep them warm. They were also markers of status, occupation, and occasionally political affiliation. A hat meant something to the person who was wearing it and to passers-by.

Over the years, however, hats have slowly transformed into a mere accessory, too often appearing in an unnecessarily bright color or littered with logos and designs.

Most importantly, choose the hat that best fits your own unique style.

Fedora

Arguably one of the most famous and timeless male hats, the fedora was popularized in the 1920s and 30s by American icons like Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart, and Cary Grant. With its pinched sides and flexible brim, the fedora is a versatile hat that can be manipulated to fit the style you are going for, and can be worn with nearly any type of clothing.

Bowler

Though the bowler hat is often associated with a long topcoat and stuffy British culture, its roots in the working class position it as a more casual topper than, say, a homburg. The stiff, round dome allows the bowler to be durable, appropriate for a variety of occasions, and practical for a range of climates.

Ascot

An ascot cap gives you warmth and comfort without sacrificing style. Characterized by a stiff brim and a rounded shape, ascots pair best with semi-formal attire. The hat should fit comfortably on your head with the brim protruding slightly out from your face.

Homburg

The homburg is a close relative of the fedora, though it is typically dressier, and pairs best with a suit or formal attire. It lacks the pinched sides, and has a slightly upturned lip all the way around. The homburg is the perfect hat if you are looking for a more formal, classy look.

Deerstalker

Leave that to Sherlock Holmes.

Discretion is key when deciding whether or not to wear a hat. Even though it might look great on you, hats aren’t appropriate for all events. When you do decide that it’s suitable to wear one, follow this hat style guide, and you’ll look good from head to toe.
