We come in all different shapes and sizes, and sometimes it can be difficult to find clothing that not only fits our personal style, but also our body.
According to the CDC, the average size of an adult male in the US is about 5 feet 10 inches and 195 pounds, with a waist circumference of 39 inches. Unfortunately, many of us deviate from that average. While it's sometimes difficult to find clothes that fit directly off the rack, those who happen to be a little shorter and/or thinner can always visit their friendly neighborhood tailor and have their duds cut to size.
For our larger friends, it's not always that easy. It's much easier to take fabric out than it is to add it in. So where does that leave you big fellas? Relegated to a life of ill-fitting clothing and "whatever is left" types of outfits? Nonsense. Regardless of what size you are, you can look stylish with these savvy tips.
Befriend a Tailor
Unfortunately, if you happen to be bigger and taller than average, it likely means that you won't be able to shop off the rack. Clothing straight from the store will most likely fit you poorly, with potential bulges, wrinkles, and extra fabric lending itself to a sloppy appearance. It's worth the small sum your tailor will charge to make that suit fit your large frame perfectly. The better you look, the better you'll feel.
Know Your Measurements
You can expedite the process and limit the pain of clothing shopping if you have a clear idea of your measurements and how you like your clothes to fit. Since you will likely have to special order some of your garments, keeping track of your sizing will allow you to shop over the phone or online.
Don't Sacrifice Comfort
Don't let the prevailing style of the day dictate how you like your clothes to fit. Just because the "slim-fit" phenomenon has taken men's style by storm doesn't mean that it's right for you. While slim fit clothing certainly isn't out of the question, you can still find a well-fitting suit that isn't uncomfortably snug.
Double-Wide
If you're a big man, with a wide frame, sport a spread-collar shirt to complement your size. If you're heading to a venue where you want to wear a tie, sport a wider tie knot, like a half or full Windsor to keep your clothing proportional to your body.
Keep it Simple, Sir
Don't go overboard with overwhelming patterns and accessories. Nice solid colors or light stripes are preferred over busy designs and graphics.
