Common Fashion Mistakes to Avoid

Common Fashion Mistakes to Avoid, especially for men over 50 by Jos A Bank

Unfortunately, not all of us are born with an innate sense of style. On the whole, we don’t have much of an eye if the pattern of our shirt clashes with our pants, which colors complement each other, or what is currently "in-style."

Yes, our fantasy football teams are performing better than expected, but our wardrobe choices might not always be as successful.

Here are some common fashion mistakes to avoid.

Poor Color-Coordination

Black and white go with nearly everything. That’s about as far as we’ve gotten. Occasionally we try and put together a stylish outfit and we get the color scheme entirely wrong. The only thing worse than an outfit that doesn’t match, is wearing an ensemble that doesn’t complement our significant other. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but save that lime green, checkered sportcoat for another day.

Rule of thumb: if you’re unsure, just ask. The only two questions you need to remember are "does this go together?" and "does this go with what you’re wearing?" Once you get 2 "yesses," head for the door.

Dress Code?

One of the most important things to consider when attending any event is the dress code. Most invitations will let you know what the appropriate attire is, and though you may choose to show up fashionably late, dressing improperly is not an option.

Rule of thumb: it’s never acceptable to be underdressed, but it’s always okay to be overdressed. Showing up to a cocktail party in jeans won’t make a positive impression, but there’s nothing wrong with a suit at a casual gathering.

Not Quite...You

If you’re the type of guy who usually wears khakis, an oxford shirt, and a blazer, don’t suddenly step out of the closet in skinny jeans and a bright red sweater.

Rule of thumb: stay true to your style and what you’re most comfortable in, not what you assume to be the most "fashion-forward."

Clean Up Your Act

It doesn’t matter if it’s your favorite shirt, or your lucky jersey. If it’s dirty, don’t even think about wearing it in public.

Rule of thumb: do your best to make sure your attire is clean and looks presentable before you leave the house. It’s also a good idea to internalize some of these handy DIY stain-removal tips to keep your clothes looking fresh for the duration of your event.

Listen gentlemen, we aren’t going to get it right all the time. But as long as we do our best to abide by these rules, looking good will be easy!
