Closet Organization Tips

You’re in a rush, but you haven’t figured out what to wear. Throwing open the closet doors only makes matters worse: it’s utter chaos. Dress shirts strewn about in no particular order, your favorite pair of pants conspicuously absent from the mix, and there are two left shoes next to each other under a pile of what you can only hope are clean clothes.
It seems like it’s only in dire moments like these, when our closets are in complete disarray, that we decide it’s time to clean up our act and get organized. A valuable task that we love to hate, getting your closet in order is important for keeping your clothes clean and wearable. It also helps give you an idea of some possible attire gaps that need to be filled.
Step 1: Come up With a System
There’s no one-size-fits-all method for closet organization. It’s more important that you come up with a system that works for you so that you can find what you need quickly and easily. You can segment your clothing in a few ways:
By clothing type and subtype
Break your closet into sections based on type of clothing, being as specific as you see fit. You could have something as broad as all shirts and all pants together, essentially breaking your closet in half. Or you could be more detailed, separating shirts based on sleeve length, and pants based on fabric and formality.
Color
If you have a wide variety of colors in your closet then you may consider breaking it down by hue. Maybe you’re feeling thorough and want to combine color and clothing type, having categories as specific as "red long sleeve shirts."
Frequency of wear
Maybe you want to make the clothes you wear the most often easily accessible, regardless of color or type. Put your favorites in an easy-to-reach place in your closet to reduce the time you have to spend hunting for your go-to outfit.
There are countless other options to make your closet manageable. Develop a method that you can rely on and get started ASAP.
Step 2: Stick to it
Once you’ve developed a system that you like, stick with it so that you’re not having to reorganize every week. As you add new elements to your wardrobe make sure they have a hanger and are placed in the right section. This will keep you organized even as the amount of clothing in your closet grows.
Step 3: Stay the Course
We all know the feeling of coming home after an exhausting day at work, and wanting nothing more than to toss that tie aside and curl up in bed. Resist the urge to use the furniture in your house as a staging area for clothes! If they aren’t going into the laundry, make sure to return them to their proper place in your closet and keep yourself organized and your house free of clutter.
There’s a trade-off to enjoying an organized closet: a little bit of work each time you get undressed to make sure your clothes are in the right place. However, this time investment is worth it when you consider the alternative: sorting through your attire avalanche once the disorder is unbearable. The choice is yours!
