What you wear to a wedding reception depends on one thing first: whether the reception follows a ceremony you are also attending, or whether you were invited to the reception only. In the first case you dress for the whole day. In the second, you take your cue from the invitation wording, the venue, and the time. This guide covers both, with outfits you can build from what most men already own.
Reception After a Ceremony
If you are at the ceremony too, you wear one outfit for the day and it needs to work for both. Dress for the more formal of the two events, which is almost always the reception if it runs into the evening. A navy or charcoal suit with a white shirt covers the widest range. You can loosen up between events by removing the tie or unbuttoning the jacket, but start dressed for the reception. Our guide on cocktail attire for men covers the most common reception dress code.
Reception-Only Invitations
A reception-only invite is still a wedding invitation, so the formality holds. Read the wording:
- Black tie: a tuxedo, or a very dark suit if you do not own one
- Cocktail or semi-formal: a dark suit, white or pale shirt, tie
- Dressy casual or festive: a suit or a sport coat with dress trousers, tie optional
- No dress code stated: default to a suit for an evening reception, a sport coat and trousers for a daytime or backyard one
Adjust for the Venue
- Hotel ballroom or country club: a full suit and tie, leather shoes
- Restaurant or loft: a suit, tie optional, or a sport coat and dress trousers
- Barn, vineyard, or backyard: a sport coat with chinos or wool trousers, an open collar, loafers or clean suede
- Beach or outdoor evening: a light suit or a linen-blend jacket, no tie, and a layer for when it cools
Time of Day
A daytime reception supports lighter colors and textures: tan, light grey, a knit tie, brown shoes. An evening reception moves darker and smoother: navy or charcoal, a silk tie, black shoes. When a reception spans both, dress for the evening and let daylight be the forgiving part. Our guide on courthouse wedding attire covers the smaller, less formal end of the range.

What to Avoid
- Jeans, shorts, or sneakers, even at a casual reception, unless the couple explicitly asks for them
- White, ivory, or head-to-toe colors the wedding party is wearing
- Treating “reception only” as an excuse to dress down; the formality is the same
- A t-shirt under the jacket at a relaxed venue; wear a collared shirt
A wedding reception outfit comes down to reading the invitation, checking the venue, and defaulting to a suit when the wording is silent. Build it around a navy or charcoal suit and adjust the tie and shoes from there. Browse men’s wedding attire for the full range.
