Guide to Suit Accessories for Men
There is more to looking good in a suit than simply the jacket and pants. Yes, having the essentials tailored properly will have you looking stylish and feeling confident, but there are small accessories that you can add to your ensemble that can make a big difference.
While these extras aren’t an essential part of an outfit, they are the small details that make your getup more fashionable.
Ties
Even though ties have become a prevalent part of modern style, they aren’t necessary to pull off a classy look. However, a well-tied neck tie or bow tie will definitely elevate your outfit. Make sure that you have mastered your favorite knot to ensure your ensemble is clean and sharp.
Tie Bars
A tie bar is a fashionable and functional accessory. The small clasp clips the tie to your shirt in order to keep the tie from swinging and ensure that it hangs straight. Tie bars come in different sizes, and one thing to keep in mind when wearing a tie bar is that the bar should never be longer than the width of the tie itself.
Belts & Suspenders
Most of the time you need something to keep your pants from hitting the ground. A nice leather belt or pair of suspenders are great functional accessories that can also lend a hint of style to your clothing. When picking out a belt make sure that the color of the leather matches or complements the shoes you plan on wearing.
With suspenders, if they aren’t going to be clipped on your pants, it’s imperative that you either make sure your pants have suspender buttons or you get some sewn in.
Note: Don’t wear suspenders and a belt at the same time. Choose one or the other.
Cufflinks
Cufflinks are a great accessory for adding a bit of personality to your dress. With so many different types out there you can choose from a variety of colors and designs, from a pair of novelty cufflinks, to standard brushed silver. The only thing to remember is that cufflinks only pair with French-cuffed shirts, so if you don’t have any of those in your closet your new shiny cufflinks are of no use.
Pocket Square
Add a splash of color to your ensemble with a silk pocket square. Choose a color and pattern that complements the rest of your ensemble, typically one that best matches your tie. There’s more to a pocket square than simply stuffing it in there. Make sure you know how to properly fold the square for maximum effect.
Lapel Pin
A lapel pin is worn on the lapel of the suit jacket and can be used to indicate affiliation with an organization or a cause, or the pin can be strictly ornamental, much like a boutonniere. When wearing a lapel pin you should limit yourself to one, as not to overcrowd your jacket and distract from the rest of your outfit.
